Manual Transmission Repair in Marietta & East Cobb, GA

Grinding into gear, hard shifting, or popping out of gear on its own usually means worn synchros, shift forks, linkage, or an input shaft — all things we repair and rebuild in house. First we sort out whether the problem is actually the transmission or the clutch, because they feel similar from the driver's seat and cost very different amounts to fix. The diagnostic is free either way.

Manual transmission internals during in-house repair
Transmission or clutch?

The same feeling can be two very different repairs.

Grinding when changing gears — usually a worn synchro inside the transmission, but a clutch that isn't fully releasing grinds too.
Hard to get into gear — could be linkage, could be synchros, could be clutch hydraulics. This is exactly what the road test sorts out.
Pops out of gear on its own — worn shift forks or gear engagement teeth. Don't hold it in gear by hand and hope; that makes it worse.
Noise in neutral that goes away with the clutch in — often an input shaft bearing, not the whole box.

Clutch slipping, a heavy pedal, or a pedal that sticks to the floor? That's the clutch side — see clutch repair & replacement.

In-house, like everything we do

What we repair and rebuild

Synchronizers — the brass rings that match gear speeds so shifts don't grind.
Shift forks & linkage — worn forks and sloppy linkage behind vague or stuck shifters.
Input shafts & bearings — the whine and rumble you hear before something expensive lets go.
Gear oil service — often overlooked entirely; the wrong or worn-out oil accelerates all of the above.
Full rebuilds — complete teardown and hand reassembly, backed 2 years / 24,000 miles. See how our rebuilds work.

Manual gearboxes are getting rare, and shops that will open one up are getting rarer. We work on them weekly — daily drivers, work trucks, and the occasional classic. You'll talk to the technician doing the work, and you're welcome to come look at the bench.
