Differential Repair in Marietta & East Cobb, GA

A whine or howl from the rear of a truck or SUV, noise that changes when you turn, or a clunk when you get on and off the throttle usually points to the differential — ring and pinion wear, carrier bearings, or backlash out of spec. We repair and rebuild differentials in house, including limited-slip and locking units, and we set them up properly with a gear pattern check, not just new parts.

Differential noises, translated

Whine or howl that rises with speed — ring and pinion wear, or gears running low on oil. Caught early, this can be a bearing-and-setup job instead of a full rebuild.
Noise on corners — spider gears or a worn limited-slip clutch pack; turning loads them differently than driving straight.
Clunk on and off the throttle — excessive backlash, worn U-joints, or both. (U-joints live on the axle & drive shaft side.)
Vibration at certain speeds — could be differential, drive shaft, or a tire. This is exactly what the free road test sorts out before anyone spends money.
Oil on the inside of the housing or wheel — pinion or axle seals. Cheap now, expensive after the gears run dry.
Setup is the whole job

What we do, and why setup matters

Ring & pinion replacement — with pattern and preload set to spec, the part most shops skip and the reason "new gears" often still whine.
Carrier & pinion bearings — the usual first failure on high-mileage trucks.
Limited-slip & locking differentials — clutch packs, rebuilds, and the right oil with the right additive.
Seals & gear oil service — pinion seal, axle seals, correct fill.

Most of this work comes to us on trucks and 4WD SUVs that tow, haul, or just carry Cobb County commutes — and a fair share arrives from other repair shops that don't set up gears. If your truck also has a 4WD engagement problem, that's the transfer case, and we do those too.

Howling from the rear end?

Bring it by. The road test is free, and catching it at the bearing stage saves the gears.
